A Message from the Principal

June is going to prove to be a busy month as we wrap up this school year. Here are some highlights that I would like to point out:
The District Elementary Track Meet is now upon us today at Riverview Middle School in Devon. Ms. Liz McBlain has been training our young athletes over the past month, and we wish them all good luck in their assorted competitions.  Academically, we have many upcoming exams and tests that our students are preparing for.

Good luck in particular to our grade 3 and 6 students as they write the Provincial Achievement Tests later on in June. All students are reminded “buckle down” and work diligently with your school assignments and classroom work as you prepare for the end of the school year. Hard work is the single most important key to academic success.

On the last student school day – June 25th, we have a jam packed plan for both our students and parents. First, we are going to have our Grade 6 Farewell and Student Awards in the morning – closely followed by the Volunteer Appreciation Tea. After lunch, we have a fun afternoon planned for our students. We will have many fun stations set up outside throughout the school yard that students will be able to rotate through. At the end of this exciting day students will be given their report cards to take home.

Lastly, and most importantly – a big “thank you” to all the volunteers (students, parents and staff) that have made this school year such a success. A school is only as strong as the community that supports it.

Enjoy your summer holidays!

Healthy Hearts World Record Setting Soccer Teams

The 24 hour World Record for longest indoor arena soccer game fell on May 21st, 2010 at 3:10 PM local time, after the Healthy Hearts Alberta BGRS Indoor Arena Soccer teams (only 13 players per team) played continuously for a new record 30 hours and 10 minutes (currently undergoing standard validation review process by Guinness World Records, UK). We thank the 26 players for their courage, commitment and volunteer spirit! The following people gave their all as players on the two world record breaking teams: Jean Paul Benoit, Fevzi Cakmak, Kim Carstairs, Nicole Cote, Michael Deters, Paul Drader, David Evans, David Froland, Robert Froland, Alin Hayes, Matthew Kierstead, Kyle MacKenzie, Jose Maldonado, Benedicto Medel, Darrell Melvie, Tony Mercer, Nabeil Moussa, Trudy Pilgrim, Tim Schwabenbauer, Bre Shinness, Mike Stadnyk, Taylor Stiles, Brian Torrance, Stan Travnik, Aaron Wilmot and Paul Wozny. Our volunteer players included moms, dads, carpenter, teachers, peace officer, principals, pastor, plumber, banker, businessman, educational assistant, university and college students and medical researchers. It was an honour to raise funds for the long term health and wellness of our community of BGRS, Leduc and Leduc County Region. We are indebted to the players and the countless volunteers who made this world record a reality. Our partners in this project: Black Gold Regional Schools, The City of Leduc, The Leduc Soccer Association, and Leduc/Nisku Economic Development Authority all gave exemplary support and assistance to make our goal a reality. I thank you all! Here are some of the news stories on our game:

Principal’s Message

This month marks the start of an exiting new Pass it On Theme: BEING POSITIVE. Our students and staff will strive to be ”extra” positive as we work our way through May. They say “it is easy to be positive when everything goes your way. The true mark of a person is to be positive when things don’t go your way.”

This saying reminds me of a story…..

“ A lady walked into her doctor’s office. As usual, the doctor was very busy and was not able to see her on time. The lady then chose to read while waiting for the doctor and flipped through a magazine. She continued to read for about 15 minutes; that quickly stretched into 30 minutes. Finally, the lady got up and asked the receptionist if the doctor was going to be much longer. The receptionist replied, “probably a few more minutes”. This proved to be false. The lady spend another 45 minutes waiting for the doctor -in total over an hour and fifteen minutes! By this point, the lady was fuming mad and gave the doctor a piece of her mind. She was very upset that the doctor thought that his time was more valuable than hers.”

What this woman did not realize is that she went from being understanding to upset and then finally mad-all in an hour and fifteen minutes; however, nothing had changed. The doctor never valued her time from the start. Late is late. It is not right that people book appointments, then, through no fault of their own, they end up waiting for someone else. More importantly, the lady also did not realize that she had a choice – to be angry and mad at the situation thus causing herself to become stressed and upset or to be positive and happy no matter what happens. Had she planned on the fact that doctors often make us wait, and brought something to keep her busy, she would not have felt like she had wasted an hour and fifteen minutes.

The Moral of the story is that “Only you can control being positive, with your attitude and choices”.

I hope that May is filled with happiness and contentment for you and your family!

All the best,
Stan Travnik
