Message From the Principal

The saying goes….April showers bring May flowers. Hopefully the rain (and snow) we have had in April will lead to warmer, spring-like weather along with the flowers. As the warm weather approaches, we are busy finishing up the school year as well as planning for next year. If you have not returned your registration intent form yet, please do so; it will help us to better prepare for next year.

I’m sure that May and June will fly by with the many events planned for the remainder of the year including our DARE grad, Jump Rope for Heart event, field trips, the Volunteer Appreciation and Provincial Achievement Tests. May will indeed be very busy!

Have a great month!

Mrs. Rhonda Brunken

BINGO

We continue to have some difficulty finding enough workers for the school Bingos. Bingos are held approximately once per month and provide about $1000 to the school for use for extras that your child would not otherwise have at school. If we do not have enough workers, the school loses the income and is fined $500!

Please do your part to help out by working 1 BINGO per family.

The upcoming Bingo dates are:

May 03 – Thursday Evening

June 01 – Friday Evening

July 06 – Friday Evening

August 06 – Monday Afternoon * stat

Parking and Traffic Issues

We are still having a great deal of issues with parking and the drop-off and pick-up of students this year. Please make sure that you are observing the traffic control signs that have been placed around the school in the staff parking area, visitor parking and bus loading zones.

We will be working with the RCMP and Bylaw Enforcement to help resolve some of these issues around our school. Please be aware of the following sections under the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulations:

Section 57 – Fail to obey traffic control device.  Fine is 172 dollars
Section 32 - Back up unsafely/ interfering with other traffic.  Fine is 115 dollars
Section 33 - Back up motor vehicle in an intersection/ crosswalk.  Fine is 115 Dollars

We take the safety of our students very seriously. By following the rules of the road, you are decreasing the chance of one of our students being injured while coming to or leaving the school grounds.

Early Education Pre-school Information Meeting

We will be having our 2012-2013 Information Meeting for our Early Education Program on Tuesday, April 17th @ 6:30 p.m.  Our preschool is an inclusive program that has some children with special needs as well as some community children.  Children must be 4 years of age by February 28th, 2013.  We have a morning program and an afternoon program three days per week.  If you are interested in having your child attend this preschool, please come to the meeting.  For more information, please contact WPS at 780-986-8456.

Now Accepting 2012-13 Kindergarten Registration

We are now taking Kindergarten registrations for the 2012-2013 school year. Please share this information with any friends or neighbours who may have Kindergarten age children. Children must be 5 years of age by February 28, 2013 to register for Kindergarten. Please stop by the school to fill out the paperwork (please bring a copy of your child’s Birth Certificate). If you would like a school tour, please contact the school to arrange a time.

We will continue to offer the user-pay Kindergarten Complementary Program (Daycare) on non-attendance days for students registered in our Kindergarten Program. Space is limited, so please register early.

Public Consultation on Proposed Boundary and Transportation Changes

The Board of Trustees of Black Gold Regional Schools is considering school attendance boundary and transportation changes for implementation for the 2012-2013 school year. Public Consultation will take place on Tuesday, April 17, at the East Elementary School Gym in Leduc from 7 – 9 PM.

Background on the school attendance area changes, and related transportation changes, may be found here

Message from the Principal

Happy Spring! I hope everyone was able to enjoy some time with friends and family during the Easter long weekend. The beautiful weather we had was a wonderful treat and gives us hope for many more days of warm sunshine to come.

Spring also signals the start to the final term of the school year. There are many ways to help your child be successful in school, but the most important thing that you can do is to read daily with your child. Reading together has great benefits – it helps develop reading fluency, develops a skill that is needed lifelong, provides a conversation starter for discussions with your child and best of all, it allows you to share some quality time together!

Have a wonderful April!

School Spirit Days

We will have two special days in March. The first is “Green Day” on Friday, March 16th, as we celebrate the ‘wearing of the green’. The second school spirit day will be Pyjama Day on Thursday, March 22nd. Students and staff can get ready for Spring Break by wearing their comfy, cozy PJs (please make sure that your child’s PJs are suitable for classroom wear.) Don’t forget the teddy bear!

Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay

Twenty-five years ago Rick Hansen had a dream – to make the world more accessible and inclusive and to find a cure for spinal cord injury (SCI). Inspired by a deep-seated belief that anything is possible, Rick’s dream took shape in the form of the Man In Motion World Tour (MIMWT). For 26 months he and his team wheeled over 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries, raising awareness of the potential of people with disabilities. The completion of this epic Tour was a testament to willpower, physical prowess and the ability to lead a seemingly impossible campaign. It was the beginning of a lifelong and selfless journey to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

The Man in MotionThe Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay is retracing the Canadian portion of the original Man In Motion World Tour. This time, one Man In Motion will be represented and celebrated by many in motion; as 7,000 participants from across Canada who have made a difference in their own communities and in the lives of others will walk, wheel or run in the nine-month, 12,000 kilometre Relay that retraces the route of Rick’s original Tour.

Willow Park is excited to b a part of this event as the Medal Bearers assemble at our school and one student from our school will act as a Medal-Bearer on Monday, March 12th. The students and staff will assemble at 9:45 a.m. to witness this historic event. Parents are welcome to attend.
